Set it up in 30 seconds

Two speakers, one phone - no tapping between sentences.

01
Open the app, pick the two languages

Choose JA on one speaker, ZH on the other. You do this once per conversation.

02
Place it between you, and talk

Speak naturally. The app notices which side is talking and flips direction itself.

03
Show it - or play it

The other person reads the bilingual screen, or taps a line to hear it spoken.

Real translations, right in the app

Live bilingual captions as people talk, plus a saved transcript you can edit.

Chinese and Japanese: two different manners

What the translation engine actually watches between these two languages.

01
「请问」isn't a word to translate

Chinese folds politeness into the sentence; Japanese keeps a separate keigo form, so the same question is rebuilt, not word-swapped.

请问,现在几点? → 何時ですか?
02
Simplified or traditional: one setting

The two scripts are separate languages. The same conversation shows either, so switch only if you want to.

我在门口等你。 → 我在門口等你。
03
Humble service speech (謙譲語)

When a hotel clerk says 恐れ入りますが, the Chinese side comes out as a plain, polite line - no literal humbling in Chinese.

恐れ入りますが、近くに駅はありますか? → 不好意思,附近有车站吗?

Why it beats tapping a translation box

Same appointment, same menu - but nobody types and nobody waits for a turn to pass.

01
No per-sentence tapping

Set once, then the app follows whoever speaks. Direction is decided by the voice, not by a button.

02
Live captions, saved transcript

Each line shows as it is spoken and stays in the transcript, ready to edit, copy or share after.

03
Read it aloud for the other person

Tap a line on the screen and the phone reads it, so the other side hears their own language too.

What it does - and what it doesn't

Straight answers beat surprises: the boundaries here are the real app's boundaries.

What it does
✓Two-sided live conversations, one phone
✓Both directions, no manual switching
✓Transcripts you can edit, copy and share
✓Read-aloud buttons on every line
What it doesn't
✕Camera or photo translation

Try this: Read the text out loud - Felo translates the sound instead.

✕Offline translation packs

Try this: Keep the app open on Wi-Fi or a data plan.

✕Handwriting or keyboard input

Try this: Press the mic and speak; text stays for reviewing the transcript.

“I just got to Japan and shopping was tough. The translator I used before made me stop after every sentence; this one starts two-way translation as soon as you open it. Pretty good.”

Frequently asked questions

Is Felo's Japanese to Chinese translator free?

Yes, Felo is free to try on iOS and Android. It rates 4.4 out of 5 on the App Store from 60 reviews. Time-based plans, such as a 2-hour plan valid for 30 days, cover longer conversations.

Can it translate Japanese to Chinese and Chinese to Japanese both ways?

Yes. Set one speaker to Japanese and the other to Chinese, and Felo translates each sentence into the other language right away. One phone handles both directions in the same conversation.

Does the Chinese side support both simplified and traditional characters?

Yes. Felo covers Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese as separate languages, so the same conversation can be shown in either script by switching the target language.

Can it handle casual Japanese, like anime or everyday speech, not just polite forms?

Usually, yes. The engine is trained on spoken Japanese, so it handles casual sentences and common slang. Regional dialects, such as Osaka or Hokkaido speech, may translate with less consistency.

What if I speak Cantonese or strongly accented Mandarin?

Standard Mandarin works best; strongly accented speech may come out less consistent. Traditional Chinese in the app reads Mandarin pronunciation, so if a Cantonese line is not recognized, try speaking it in Mandarin.

Does Felo need the internet to translate?

Yes. Live translation runs on the network, so keep a stable connection. There are no offline packs, and the full 16-language voice support needs to reach the service.

Can it read a Japanese menu or sign with the camera?

No. Felo is a voice translator for conversations - it translates what people say, not printed text. If a menu is on a table, read it aloud and Felo will translate it for you.

How is this different from pasting text into a web translator?

A web translator works sentence by sentence and needs both parties to type. Felo listens to the conversation, translates as each person speaks, and keeps a transcript you can edit and share, so two people can talk naturally with one phone.

Can I use it on a phone call?

Keep the call on speaker and place the phone nearby - Felo translates what the microphone hears. It does not sit inside the system call, so voices sent through earphones are not translated.
